Blurb:
This is Lola's story. She has a secret no one can know. Once a safe haven,
her home has turned into a prison, and she fears if she doesn't somehow escape,
she will lose herself completely. She finds her escape in Jack; a troubled young
man with a cynical smile and eyes that see all Lola tries to hide. But even Jack
can't save her from the evil at home.
My Review:
Safe and Sound by Lindy Zart was one of the best books I have read in a while. In Safe and Sound we meet highschool student Lola who spends her school days trying to blend in with the walls. She used to have some really good friends at school, including Sebastian, but now it seems that his new girlfriend Roxanne's goal is to make her life hell. She feels totally alone in her life, but it hasn't always been this way. It seems that since her new stepfather has come into her life a year ago, all her friends have abandoned her, even her own mother seems to have forgotten about Lola. As much as Lola tries to be invisible at school she wishes she could be the same at home. This is not possible though, and Lola is forced to deal with the abuse and neglect all alone.
Will Lola be strong enough to deal with everything that is happening to her? Why is her mom standing on the sidelines watching her life fall apart? Will her old friends ever come around and talk to her again?
I was pulled into this book from page one. The story seemed so real, I was able to feel everything that Lola was going through. Bob's actions made me angry and it made me wish I could reach into the book to help Lola. I would highly recommend this book. If you are looking for a spell binding, teeth clenching, heartaching book, this one is for you. Add it to your TBR today!
About the author:
I've been writing since I was a wee lass. I was reading before that; possibly
while still in the womb. Don't think about that too much. I started out with
short horror stories and poetry. I was terrible at it. The poems not so much,
but the stories were awful. I decided to finish a book (and I DO mean
finish--I'd started plenty throughout the years) when I was in my mid-twenties
(so not that long ago because I'm young and will forever stay that way). Again,
not my best work. But that's the thing about writing; it improves with time. (It's also a good thing to know your work can't possibly be any worse than it was when you first started.) What I love most about writing is having people tell me how much they enjoy my work, how my writing touches them, makes them feel intensely. Bringing a reader to laughter or tears is a wonderful feeling for a writer, and no, I'm not sadistic. *insert evil laugh HERE* It means I got them to feel, to respond to something I created.
Also, I just like to make stuff up and put it down on paper. I have an endless supply of stories in my head; lots of stuff to share with the world. Happy Reading!
